Sustainable Coffee from the Heart of Philadelphia – Greenstreet Coffee Roasters

19 Jul

Ever wondered where we get our delicious coffee from? Well, we at Heirloom are happy to serve coffee provided by Greenstreet Coffee.

Greenstreet Coffee is a roasting company located right in the heart of Philadelphia. Chris and Tom Molieri started Greenstreet Coffee Roasters to offer a fresh approach to great coffee and sustainable business practices. It is these practices that they believe are the driving force between building a stronger local community here in Philadelphia that will allow for a positive impact on developing countries that cultivate the beans we love.

Chris developed this passion for roasting through sustainable practices developed while living and working in Portland, Oregon. It was there that his love for the beauty of coffee thrived and he discovered just how exciting it can be. After a year of life in Portland, finding his passion in coffee and sharing this enthusiasm with his brother Tom, Chris moved back to Philadelphia to begin Greenstreet Coffee Roasters. Tom soon joined the company and has helped define their story as the new Greenstreet Counts. By reinventing the name of a 1950’s gang of teenagers known to be ungoverned and unruly, they chose to call themselves Greenstreet Coffee Roasters to focus their combined efforts on roasting great tasting coffee and to build a positive name for Greenstreets of the world and Philadelphia as a whole.

At Heirloom our guests particularly enjoy the Tanzania Peaberry, a medium-dark roasted coffee, with a lively acidity that offers notes of fruit with a faint cardamom spice and giving way to a rounded chocolate finish. Normally the fruit (“cherry”) of the coffee plant contains two seeds (“beans”) that develop with flattened facing sides, but sometimes only one of the two seeds is fertilized, and the single seed develops with nothing to flatten it. This oval (or pea-shaped) bean is known as peaberry. Peaberry beans are widely reputed to roast better and more evenly than flat berries; their rounder shape minimizes sharp edges and allows the berries to roll about the roasting chamber more easily, as well as because the higher bean density improves heat transfer in the roasting process. Peaberry beans have been carefully selected, essential for optimal quality,
